An attempt to bring the story closer to the character and tone Mignola had envisioned in his graphic novels. Less comedy. No romance. More horror.

Summary: Many scenes, cuts, and story elements have been cut or reduced to bring this film closer to its source material horror roots - such as the title character's maturity, the BPRD's presence in the world, and the lighter tone presented in the theatrical/director's cut.
Detailed Edit List (click to expand)
- Opening credits and memorium added.
- Fan-edit title added.
- Broom reacting to Hellboy on the news is removed. This version of the film doesn’t have the B.P.R.D (and thus Hellboy) as a secret from the public, as it feels far too similar to Men In Black and isn’t needed.
- The attack on the Museum shows up sooner, since it helps shape the film closer to Wake The Devil’s inclusion of a similar scene and helps with the immediate danger of Rasputin. He’s now a tangible threat.
- Sammael’s transformation is also just teased instead of being fully revealed to still save for the fight with Hellboy.
- Hellboy’s reveal doesn’t paint him as a teenager in a time-out. Instead, he now seems grumpy but still fairly mature and adult. He and Broom are still distant with each other, but Hellboy isn’t a pouting teenager who openly bad-mouths his adopted father and complains about his life all the time.
- The garbage truck montage scene is removed, as it feels way too over the top and removed from Mignola’s original stories having the B.P.R.D be so secretive.
- Hellboy hiding his cigar is removed. Far too childish for my taste. Now it just appears their relationship is strained but still loving.
- Cut down on Abe talking about how Hellboy likes to go in alone.
- Cut down on Hellboy taunting Sammael. I think it’s cooler for him to just end on “Kitchen’s Closed”.
- Cut Hellboy screaming at Myers for saving his life. Feels very out of character.
- Cut Myers yelling at Hellboy about avoiding civilians. The B.P.R.D are not secret in this version of the film.
- Cut down on Hellboy muttering to himself while chasing Sammael in the subway tunnel.
- Additional Sammael noises are included to smooth the transition between the introduction of Liz and Rasputin hinting at his plans for Hellboy.
- Hellboy stealing beer is gone. The music doesn’t feel like something you’d hear in a proper Mignola adaptation.
- Romance between Hellboy and Liz is removed. I was never a complete fan of the relationship upon reading the comics, and it’s continued to bother me more as I get older. Now they're just close friends like in the comics, which I find more fitting. You can have a mature male main character who doesn’t need a love interest.
- Some lines are cut in the conversation with Liz to make Hellboy less childish.
- Lines and expressions of Hellboy looking romantically at Liz are cut down to make it seem like he just wanted to check in on her out of affection, and NOT romance.
- Cut Hellboy collapsing, since it wasn’t made explicitly clear or visual how wounded Hellboy was. It also helps cut down on the clear romantic attraction between him and Liz.
- Cut the scene of Hellboy berating Myers and Broom telling him he’s the right one to make Hellboy become a man. Hellboy’s story has NEVER been primarily a coming of age tale, and it bothers me that this is the character arc they chose for the character in this film. He isn’t a nasty teenager learning to be a better man. He’s a tired adult coming to terms with what his worth actually is.
- Cut the scene of Myers and Liz. The tonal whiplash of Myers and Liz having romantic chemistry with a banging pop soundtrack feels so tonally disjointed from Hellboy trying to save Clay’s life.
- Cut Hellboy pitching a tank at Manning. Hellboy wouldn’t willingly put his life in danger, or Abe’s. No matter how bad his temper gets in the comic-books he wouldn’t attempt to kill a B.P.R.D agent or ally unless
they’d tried to kill him. This feels very out of character. It also makes you empathize with him even more later when he saves Manning from Kroenen.
- Cut Hellboy acting like an ignorant fool after pitching the tank at Manning. So now it just ends after Broom says “they’ve made some changes around here”.
- The sub-plot between Myers and Liz has been removed. This whole section feels like it’s from a completely different movie, and makes Hellboy a very petulant and bratty character compared to the comics.
- Removed Hellboy bad-mouthing Myers in the car. Feels petulant.
- Cut Hellboy eavesdropping on Myers and Liz talking about romance. Again, this subplot doesn't work with my version of the film.
- Cut the scene of Hellboy and Liz having a heart to heart. As much as I love this scene, it doesn’t work with the non-romantic angle I’m taking with this version.
- Liz doesn’t need to be slapped to have her powers work. Instead, her anger manifests her powers. This, IMO, does more justice for Liz’s agency in the story.
- Movie ends with Hellboy walking away and saying "Gonna be sore in the morning” as this feels more appropriate for the character's blue-collar attitude. No make-out session with Liz on fire.
