Summary: The lighter, slapstick tone is reduced to be more palpable. The pregnancy subplot is removed, alongside the B.P.R.D being secret and Hellboy being an immature teenager in love with Liz. Abe acts more like his comic counterpart, and the focus shifts primarily on the tragedy of the Elves.
Detailed Edit List (click to expand)
- Opening credits added.
- Fan-edit title added. Also having audio snippet from Bride Of Frankenstein (1935).
- Scenes of Manning talking about Hellboy pinning up target-practice sheets of him has been removed. Makes Hellboy a petulant man-child.
- Removed scene of Hellboy and Liz having relationship problems. In my cuts, they are not a couple.
- Also removed Manning baiting Hellboy with cigars. Makes him super childish.
- Removed banter of Hellboy and Liz talking about their relationship during the Auction section.
- No reveal of Liz being pregnant.
- Also took out Liz saying “You should be running”. Her trauma shouldn’t be a catchphrase.
- Cut around Hellboy intentionally letting himself get blown out the window. The B.P.R.D are NOT secret in this trilogy of edits, and this reflects that. Not the best cut, but it still mostly works.
- Removed Hellboy exposing the B.P.R.D, since they’re open in this version of the duology.
- Took out Hellboy being an ignorant buffoon watching the TV and Manning reprimanding him. Feels supremely out of character and doesn’t work for my vision.
- Took out Liz’s scene of her having a pregnancy test.
- Removed Hellboy taunting Abe behind his back and bad-mouthing Krauss.
- Reduced some of the comedy of Hellboy and Krauss arguing over whether to save the cat from the troll.
- Removed Hellboy slapping the tumor-creature so many times. It’s too cartoonish and over-the-top for my taste.
- Hellboy bragging to Mr. Wink is gone. Instead, he just immediately gets punched. I think it lets the next line, “That cigar! It was Cuban” land without making Hellboy look dumb by continuing to talk.
- Took out Hellboy being discriminated against by humans after taking out the Elemental. Instead, it just cuts from him holding the baby to Abe and Princess Nuala building romantic tension.
- Took out Beautiful Freak so that some Beltrami score is present in the film and Broom’s loss is still felt.
- Took out the Barry Manilow sing-along. Love it in the theatrical cut, but feels too out of place here.
- As the pregnancy subplot is gone, I removed the cut-aways to Abe and Hellboy being drunk and talking about her. Now, it’s just Nuala trying to hide the Elvish cylinder.
- The scene of Liz, Hellboy, and Abe at the surgery table is cut down as the romance is gone.
- Liz choosing to save Hellboy’s life is preserved, but her telling him about the kids is gone.
- Cut down instances of Hellboy calling Liz “babe” since she’s not his girlfriend in this version.
- Added the end-credits track, “Resolution And Hyperspace” from Aliens as the B.P.R.D emerge from underground.
- Cut Liz telling him about the twins.
- No Barry Manilow credits music. Just the music and the howling wind, reflecting Hellboy’s unsure future.
- Hellboy and the team quit working for the B.P.R.D, but not before he decides to take his gun with him.
- The credits also utilize “Finding Beauty” by Craig Armstrong. Feels in tone with the tragic tone of this cut.
